Jeff Koons’ Guggenheim dog, Guggenheim museum, Bilbao, Spain

A few photos of the big flower encrusted puppy dog in front of the Bilbao Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. We dug around under the flower skin to see what kind of system they were using. the annual flowers are basically stuck in a sort of propagation felt lining. The whole thing is undoubtedly dependent on a large quantity of fertilizer and water to keep it lush in bloom. It must take quite a bit of maintenance to periodically replace all the flowers. Seems like they change it up often, using different plants and so forth. I wonder what it looks like in the middle of winter. Personally, I think a sculpture like this would be much more interesting using hardy perennial flowering vines, something a long the lines of a hybrid between this dog form and the flora of MFO Park, in Zurich.

And another one looking up.
