I photographed this tree and collected seeds last week at my friend Gabriel Howearth’s botanical garden, Buena Fortuna, located in Southern Baja (just up the East cape from San Jose de los Cabos). On eleven acres, Gabriel has amassed a collection of over 3,500 species of plants, ranging from a vast collection of lettuces and vegetables to tropical fruit trees (mango, lychee, chico zapote, mamey sapote, white sapote, black sapote, citrus, and others), and a number of varieties and colors of giant bamboo species such as Guadua angusitfolia. The list goes on and on.
This was an especially attractive tree, he called it Hau, related to hibiscus and baobab. I have temporarily forgotten the Latin name.
