Z. gilleti, primarily a timber tree, can be found growing between 1,500 – 2,300 m. It is widely planted in highland regions. The timber is heavy, tough, yet easily worked. It is yellow white in color, and emits a sweet scent.
The tree is typically propagated from seed. To obtain quality seed, pick the red/brown fruit from the tree before the capsules have opened, dry them in the sun for a few days, then the seed can be shaken out.
