Here’s an interesting overview video of the aquaponic system at Growing Power… “Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner.”

This is just amazing. A very low tech, and far less productive version of this was used in Fordham University in 1976, In that experiment, which i think only lasted one year. Elephant manure from the Bronx Zoo was used to fertilize the plants, and he excess was fed to tilapia atthe time which were too small to filet.
How interesting. I hope it’s as good as this film makes it sound and look.
The cynic in me says, ‘If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true,’ and, ‘Where’s the commercial version? Profits could be made!’ and, ‘Why so many repeat mentions of people from diverse “communities”? Mentioning that once would be enough but this write-up sounds quite patronising.’
Still, maybe this idea has potential. I do hope so. I like the fact that it’s to be done in greenhouses, protecting the fish and the plants from weather and also (if air filters were fitted) from particulate pollution.
