Rhamnaceae, Ziziphus mauritiana (Z. jujuba), Jujube – Vietnam

These are photos from a Jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) farm near Fang Ranh, Vietnam. Farmers in the area cultivate the sprawling tree/shrub on a horizontal trellis, very similar to the way they cultivate grapes. The trees are relatively fast growing, and are coppiced every year just before the beginning of the rainy season. Although I’ve seen this species cultivated in a number of different areas around the world, these were some of the healthiest trees, with the largest and best tasting fruit. Many of the trees below are around seven years old.
Below shows the tree just after its been cut back, at the end of the dry season.
