We are wondering if something is wrong with our local “torote colordo” trees. The last couple of years we have noticed potato skin like shapes falling off of the trunks and limbs, and, the trees seem to be dying. What is happening to them?

Some of my Torotes have the same condition; it’s a root fungus that spreads to trunk showing up as circles of decay; and once affected by this condition the tree rots and dies. Also sometimes at the base of the trunk a big “Elephant Ear” like fungus appears and it kills the tree.

I was wondering if anyone know how to combat this fungus?

Chrissy, if by “potato skin like shapes” you mean peeling bark, as seen in the photo above, don’t worry, there is nothing wrong with your trees. Bursera simaruba naturally have peeling skin as to other Bursera species. If you’re referring to something else, you can send me a photo and I can try to help you diagnose the problem.
